DJ Awards 2016 takes place at Pacha Ibiza

embedded-1475605013

Here in Ibiza we’re emerging from what can only be described as one outrageously epic weekend (Music On closing, Ushuaïa closing, Space closing, ‘nuff said), and the action continued apace on Monday night as the prestigious DJ Awards were held at Pacha, during which the industry’s top players were rewarded for their services to the scene.

DJs descended in their droves on the Ibiza Town venue to find out if they’d been crowned the winner of their category and had been given the go ahead to take home one of the distinctive green kryptonite awards. Sixteen of them in total were up for grabs, 12 of which were voted for by you, the discerning public, and it turns out you all used your vote wisely.

The biggest cheer of the night perhaps inevitably, went to Carl Cox, who was crowned King (yet again) as the best Techno and International DJ. Black Coffee went home with the Deep House crown, Armin van Buuren was named best Trance DJ, Jamie XX won the Electronicaaward and the Martinez Brothers stomped to victory in the Tech House category. WooMoon went home with the best new Ibiza Night title.

This year, there was also the new introduction of the Iconic Club Award, which rightfully was presented to the one and only Space. The club’s owner, Pepe Roselló was there to pick up his trophy, doling out some characteristic pearls of kindhearted wisdom and words of thanks in the process. What a way to see out the season.

Ibiza 2016 season news roundup ONE

embedded-1454938008

These past weeks have been marked in the calendar by every Ibiza lover worth their salt since the last track of the last set of the last closing party. This is so because, slightly earlier than previous years, promoters and club owners are revealing their parties for the season in order to bring to the island the best choices for locals and holiday makers.

As some folks have announced their return and development for 2016, others have said goodbye like Richie Hawtin’s Enter team – which confirmed last month its desire to explore other destinations for the hottest months. But sometimes changes are necessary and, apart from being a farewell year and the last call for those who have never been into Space or checked the legendary Carl Cox out at his Ibiza parties, 2016 marks a season where fresh air and novelties seem to be the main protagonists.

If you have missed any of the news from throughout January, here’s a sluce of what we know so far. Of course, if you want to know every tiny detail – far too much to include in this weeks magazine – then please head on over to our website here.

1 – Space Ibiza Opening date confirmed

The 29th of May is the date that the legendary Space Ibiza club has set to kick off what will be its final season ever, in the form we know it as today. Five different areas in which to lose, find or expose yourself under a very special canopy of energy, happiness and nostalgia. The artists who will liven up the evening are still unknown at this early stage, but you can expect quality at the highest of levels for this, their last Space opening party. The first bunch of tickets are available now at Spotlight for 50€.

2 – Cream and Together come back to Amnesia for 2016

Thursdays are for Cream and Tuesdays for Together. Both parties have confirmed their respective residencies at San Rafael’s super club. The Cream trance and house family will celebrate a milestone of 21 years on the island for over 14 weeks from the big opening on the 9th of June until September 15th. Meanwhile, Together is preparing its 6th year bringing the bass to Ibiza’s crowd with a mammoth sized 16-week stint which will kick off the next 7th of June. Big names like Chase & Status, Sigma and Skrillex were on the decks last summer, just saying.

3- ABODE announces Ibiza Sankeys’ basement residency

Flying all the way from the UK, ABODE will land at Ibiza’s Sankeys the following 24th of June for a whole summer season. The hugely respected London party has hosted some notorious names and labels like Hot Creations, Paradise and Defected, so expect quality selectors in front of the dancefloors. For 2016, ABODE keeps Fridays at Sankeys’ Basement room. There’s plenty of change at Sankeys this year too, check the link for more.

4 – Glitterbox confirms line-ups for 2016 season

Glitterbox, the disco and house party which took over Space for the very first time last summer and was a huge success, is returning this season to the house that nurtured its spark. Every Friday from the 3rd of June and until the 23rd of September, the glitter-babes will be spreading love by the hand of a first round of confirmed artists like Defected label-head Simon Dunmore, Basement Jaxx, Dimitri From Paris, Todd Terry, Joey Negro, Roger Sanchez, DJ Pippi and Purple Disco Machine.

5 – Pure Pacha, Martin Solveig’s ‘My House’ and F*** Me I’m Famous return to Pacha in 2016

Pacha confirms three of the parties for the summer season. Pure Pacha will be Saturday’s queen one more time with Bob’s Sinclair at the helm all ready to turn the club into an authentic Parisian cabaret. Martin Solveig’s ‘My House’ returns for round 2 of Wednesday nights from 25th May, a residency that also coincides with the celebration of 11 years on Ibiza for Mr Solveig. And, of course, one of the legendary party brands on the island, David Güetta’s F*** Me I Am Famous, will be back to the club on Thursdays for 19 weeks. No line-ups revealed yet.

Living like a superstar for a week in Europe’s party capital is actually cheaper than you’d imagine

JS80702175

IT DOESN’T get much more hedonistic than staying in the villa that was home to one of Ibiza’s biggest DJs for the entire summer the year before your visit.

That’s exactly what we had at the simply spectacular Minimal Lab, one of countless superstar pads available from villa rental experts chicibiza.com
Tucked away in a residential area behind secure electronic gates, the beautiful modern building looked like something from MTV’s Cribs.

With slick boy toy touches like electronic lighting and sound system throughout the house, an amazing pool area and a layout allowing for privacy thanks to a clever open-plan format, no wonder Luciano, the legendary DC10 resident and one of the world’s top DJs, called it home for a summer season.

We certainly felt like superstars in the slick pad, which sleeps eight very comfortably across four bedrooms – although there were just four of us, my wife Deborah and I and our friends Emma and Roland.

It doesn’t cost as much as you might imagine to live like DJ royalty for a week – prices at Minimal Lab start from just £3848 a week, so between eight, it’s cheaper than a decent hotel on the island.

We’re all Ibiza veterans and have enjoyed the underground side and hidden gems many times.

But with the weather a little ropey for a fair bit of our stay – for the first time in 20 years of going – we decided to stick with the high-rolling theme.

Chicibiza.com can help with this too – they can sort everything from beach club day beds to dinner reservations and VIP tables in clubs.

Think of the convenience and services of a hotel but with the place to yourself. We flew with Jet2.com,
an easy three-hour hop from Glasgow at very low prices and really generous luggage weight limits of 22kg.

The stunning villa provides you with an ultimate feeling of luxury
Chicibiza.com picked us up and took us to our villa, so the whole experience was easy and hassle-free. A breeze… so we could focus on fun.

Ibiza Rocks is always a must on any trip – whether the gig on Wednesdays or the WAR party on Fridays.

We were lucky enough to catch the brilliant Lion Babe followed by a stellar Mark Ronson DJ set, all from a superb table overlooking the action perfectly. Drinks are reasonable at Ibiza Rocks and the atmosphere generated in the courtyard during shows is incredible.

Get yourself on the list for the after-party at Ibiza Rocks House – sign up on the website and get in
early when announcements are made – and you get to spend the rest of the night dancing under the stars in one of the world’s coolest hotels with the headliners you’ve just seen perform.

Carl Cox’s night at Space comes to an end this year, so you HAVE to go and see the big man in action as it’s your last chance. You’re talking ridiculous line-ups and proper music – none of your EDM nonsense here – at one of the world’s legendary clubs. Music Is Revolution guarantees a brilliant night every time.

Destino is the place if you want outdoor high-end partying.

In a magnificent location with spectacular surroundings, you’ll hear incredible DJ line-ups and live acts.

Legendary DJ Carl Cox performing live at Space
It might be a million miles from the spiritual roots of Ibiza, but partying under the stars at Destino is an unforgettable experience. Of course, DC10 is still a must on Monday for Circo Loco – it has to be done.

Away from clubs, La Escollera is another winner for us all on every visit. Situated near Salinas overlooking the sea, with the salt flats behind, it’s a beautiful, authentic restaurant with superb food and drinks and a cosy feel.

If you want to avoid the in-your-face champagne and table-dancing vibe, this is the place for you. Think classy but subtle. It’s reasonable too, considering that the food is out of this world and the views pretty much unrivalled. Go. You won’t regret it.

Nassau is a firm favourite and one that continues to excel year after year. The lobster paella is a thing of beauty and very reasonably priced, while they’re justifiably famous for their cocktails – the lychee caipiroska is a thing of beauty too. Whether you go for lunch or dinner, drinks or just to lie on the beach surrounded by beautiful people, Nassau is the pick of the Bossa Beach strip.

With all the glitz and glamour in the world, sometimes you just want an old favourite… like pizza at
El Pirata. Far and away the best on the island, these huge slabs of thin, crispy pizza cover whole tables.

El Pirata is right in the heart of the action in the port at the bottom of Ibiza’s Dalt Villa, by Rock bar and just along from Base bar (essential stops). You’re gazing across at huge gleaming yachts, but with low prices, great drinks and those pizzas, you won’t need bottomless pockets at El Pirata.

No trip to Ibiza is complete without a visit to Hotel Es Vive’s legendary Experience bar. Every time, without fail, we pop in for one drink and stay all night. It’s that kind of place.

Throw in a few barbecues (in the rain, this time) and an awful lot of villa partying and that was about it for our latest Balearic jaunt.

And you won’t be surprised to learn we’re already eyeing up a tasty new villa from chicibiza.com for
this summer…

Eivissa – HarperCollins buys Ibiza cookbook

045fd5e45e1094f738bb78dc2baf4c0d

HarperCollins has bought what is being billed as the first recipe book to showcase Ibiza cuisine.

HarperNonFiction publisher Grace Cheetham acquired world rights to Eivissa by Anne Sijmonsbergen from Eugenie Furniss at Furniss Lawton and will publish on 2nd June (£20 hardback).

The publisher described Ibiza as “on the cusp of a food revolution” with its traditional farming and fishing culture supplemented with a wave of chefs and producers making artisan products and “vibrant” food.

Sijmonsbergen is a chef and organic tomato farmer who moved to the island with her husband 10 years ago, buying a 450-year-old farmhouse. “Her tenure there has coincided with this food revolution, and has led her on an odyssey to discover the food of the island and the people who make it,” said HarperCollins.

Eivissa will reflect the heritage of the Ibicenco cuisine, but with contemporary, seasonal twists, with recipes including Grilled Courgette Ribbons or Asparagus & Mint Tostada for spring, or Steamed Mussels with Samphire or Chicken with Roasted Figs for Autumn.

The book is said to be full of “stunning photography, shot on location in Ibiza, featuring both the food and the island’s beautiful backdrop”, with the publisher targeting the Polpo/Persiana market and promising Eivissa will have “all the ingredients to make it the iconic cookbook of the year”.

Cheetham said: “We’re so excited to be publishing Eivissa. Anne’s recipes represent the diverse and incredible flavours found in Ibicenco cuisine today, and they’re simple to make and perfect to share. For so many people there are memories of fun-filled summer holidays on the island. And this is the book that they’ll reach out for to recreate vivid, memorable meals. There has never been a book in this area and there’s a real gap in the market – and with Eivissa we have a fantastic opportunity to publish something quite magical.”

Greeko – Black Panther (OFFICIAL) ARR009 Music Video

Greeko_Black_Panther

Italian up-and-comer Klaudio Lagji, AKA Greeko, has dropped a new deep house-inspired techno track called “Black Panther.” The single marks the artist’s debut on the trendsetting Alfa Romero Recordings label, Ibiza Voice reports.

The dark and beautiful video explores issues of human rights and discrimination. With Tommie Smith’s story from the 68 Olympic Games in Mexico city at its core, the video goes on to highlight how the same issues remain in such hot focus in today’s modern climate.

ARR009 welcomes the young but wildly talented Klaudio Lagji AKA Greeko to the stage. His beautiful, slowly evolving deep techno cut grows into a bold and colourful expression of his immersive vision of the dancefloor. Shimmering with emotional depth, a retrospective gaze and futuristic spirit all at once, “Black Panther” has a truly timeless feel that squirms free of any expectation one might assume.

Guido Bartoli, a graphic designer, illustrator and visual artist who works from his Pisa base, created the fantastic cover.
